How do I order batting / wadding ?

You can order batting by the centimetre. Most battings are specified 2.54 metres (254cm or 100”) wide but are usually 2.6 metres (260 cm or 102”) wide when spread out to allow your quilt to fit when pinning or basting.

How do I order batting by the centimetre (cm)
There are 100cm in a metre.  To order e.g. 2 metres you enter 200 in the quantity and add to cart.  Minimum order of any batting is 50cm.

You can also order a batting sample pack to which has a 25cm square (approx.) of each of our battings so you can make a test quilting sample and assess the feel, loft and weight for yourself.

What type of batting do I need ?
Low-loft batting is the most common thickness used in NZ and  thinner and results in a medium finish that balances the look of the fabric piecing and the quilting.  Low-loft batting is usually available in 254cm (100”) width in wool, cotton, bamboo and polyester. Cotton & Bamboo provide low to medium warmth, polyester medium and wool for greater warmth.  Polyester batting is usually easiest for beginner quilters and is also available in 45” (114cm) width for smaller quilts and other projects.

High-loft batting is thicker, warmer and creates a puffier look with more visible quilting lines, high-loft batting is usually 150cm wide.

Pellon or Parlan is thinner than low-loft and is often used for baby wraps, light weight cot quilts, and other craft projects.  Pellon / Parlan can also have an iron-on fusible coating on one or both sides for easy handling in small projects.

You can also order a batting sample pack to which has a 25cm square (approx.) of each of our battings so you can make a test quilting sample and assess the stitchability, loft and weight for yourself.

How much batting do I need ?
For quilt tops up to 42” wide (108cm ) approx. you can use a low-loft batting up to 45” (114cm) wide.  Measure the height of your quilt and order approx. 15cm (6”) extra for easier pinning/basting and sewing of your quilt

For larger quilt tops up to 254cm (100”) high you should order the width of your quilt top - plus at least 15cm (6”) extra for easier pinning/basting and sewing of your quilt.  E.g. for a quilt top 72” (183cm) high and 60” (152cm) wide you should order 170cm (67”) of batting.

For extra-large quilt tops where height and width are both over 100” you may need to piece the batting or use a quilt-as-you-go method.

You can phone us if you want to discuss how much batting you need for your project and we will do the calculations for you.
