Part 2 – Yarn ply, weight & Length?

In New Zealand and Australia Ply is almost always now used to refer to the thickness of the yarn not to the number of strands twisted together.  Used this way a higher ply number means a thicker yarn. 

North America, Europe and UK may still use “ply” as meaning number of strands. 

The table below gives the modern “Ply” number as used in NZ, a description of use, and equivalent North America & International categories.

Medium-thick yarn for autumn to winter garments to add warmth without extra bulk.

 

5 / Bulky

12 ply, Mohair

Light-weight yarn with a high-loft ('halo' or fluffy) knitted on bigger needles Can also be used as an 8-ply for warmer garment.

A thick yarn that knits up quickly for children's and adult winter jumpers, cardigans and hats
