I'm using a different yarn... How much do I need?

Posted by Fern on 25th Aug 2025

Did you Know? – When substituting yarn in a knitting pattern you can calculate how much you need by comparing metres per 100 grams to your new yarn.  We state the grams and metres for all our yarn to help you order the correct amount for your project.

I've added an example below - starting with a pattern which needs 10 balls of "standard weight" 8ply/double knitting wool.  In NZ standard weight for 8ply is 100 metres per 50 grams.

We also use www.yarnsub.com to find out of date and non-NZ yarn specifications when working with vintage or overseas patterns.  And we’re available by phone or email to help with the maths if you need it!
